Cooperative living in beautiful Oakland home

Summary:

Local-healthy-organic-artistic-community-loving couple seeking another like-minded couple to share spacious Oakland home and garden. The rent is $1150 and includes a bedroom, another room that could be used as an office/workspace and shared use of the meditation/movement space, kitchen, living room and bathrooms. Shared meals ala Weston A Price, shared gardening including chickens, and shared intention of inching ourselves closer to sustainable living. Wanting to live with others who are tidy, openly communicative and committed to living cooperatively. Move-in date is negotiable, sometime between May 1st to June 1st.

The House:

The main house is approximately 1900 sq. feet with wood floors, natural light, a living room, large meditation/movement room, and two rooms that were designed as bedrooms but are currently being used as offices/workspaces. In the back is a large “cottage-style” studio bedroom with separate entrance, and on the ground floor we recently built another bedroom which also has a separate entrance.

The kitchen is spacious and well-equipped, with a sweet little breakfast nook. There is one full bathroom and another half-bath. We also have a full-size clawfoot tub with hot & cold water spigots in a cozy corner in the garden that we use for outdoor “Esalen-style” baths.

There is a large basement with plenty of space for storage, bikes, equipment etc., as well as washer, dryer and additional freezer.

We have a large backyard garden where we grow a variety of vegetables, herbs and flowers year-round. It gets a good deal of sun and the soil has been tested and is free of heavy metals and chemicals. We also have a small garden in the front of the house.

Your Rooms:

The idea behind the arrangement of rooms is to have private bedrooms that are separated from the main living space of the house. This allows for more privacy and a sense of us each having our own space, while still enjoying the benefits of sharing a large house. Your bedroom would be a recently converted room on the ground-floor with a large, floor-to-ceiling “french door” that opens into the garden. It's a bit funky but it has a lot of character, and it is quite spacious. It also has a small sink with working plumbing and a separate entrance from the main house.

You would also get a room in the house that is approximately 12x15 with a small closet that sits directly off of the kitchen. This room could be used as an office, a workspace, a quiet space, or whatever you’d like to use it for (other than a bedroom). We share the meditation/movement space (gorgeous, large room in the front of the house), and all other living spaces.

The Neighborhood:

The house is situated in a friendly, centrally-located neighborhood right on the border of Oakland and Berkeley. We are two blocks from Ashby Bart and a block from the Nomad Cafe, La Pena Cultural Center, the Starry Plough, Essex St. Hot Tubs. We are walking distance from Berkeley Bowl, Whole Foods and the Tuesday Berkeley Farmer’s Market, and a short bike ride to the Saturday Berkeley Farmer’s Market and the Sunday Oakland/Temescal Farmer’s Market. We are part of a local co-op offering raw milk, raw cheese and free-range, organic meats and pastured eggs, and the pick-up location for this is just two blocks away.

We’ve found that we rarely need to use our car anymore, but when we do freeway access to the 24/580 is very close by and parking is readily available on the street.

Kitchen/Food:

We both follow the Weston A. Price principles of nutrition and eat a diet of organic, nutrient-dense whole foods. We make our own sauerkraut, kefir, yogurt, creme fraiche, and bone broths and bake our own bread regularly. We cook three meals a day for ourselves, so the kitchen is the hub of the home and the center of frequent activity. It is also a temple, of sorts, and we like to treat it like one. Dishes are washed and counters are cleaned after they are used, and our guideline is to leave the kitchen in the same state as we found it (clean!) before we started cooking.

Our relationship to food is a very important part of our life, and we would like to share those values with the people we live with. Ideally we are seeking a couple who is familiar with the Weston A. Price principles and follows them in their own life. Among other things, this means eating locally-grown, organic, nutrient-dense foods. Our hope is that you will be open to sharing meals together and sharing the weekly preparation of ferments (kefir, sauerkraut, yogurt, etc.) and bone broths as well.

We aren’t dogmatic about this and we don’t make personal judgments about people who don’t follow this approach to nutrition. We have many close friends who do not. However, we’ve found through experience that the home is more harmonious when its inhabitants share a hearth.

We are also intent on producing as much food as we can in our own yard. We would love to share our home with others who garden. We are planning to get chickens and would be happy to have your involvement in the care and rewards of these little feathered friends.

Living Together:

We are both what you might call “homebodies”. We both do at least part of our work from home, and with our love of food and cooking we spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Because of this we try to treat our home as a sanctuary and maintain a warm, comfortable and nourishing environment that serves as a “retreat” from the intensity of urban life.

Communication and personal responsibility are very important to us. We’ve both lived in community a lot over the years and recognize the necessity and benefit of having regular “check-ins” and house meetings to discuss issues as they arise and to simply stay connected to and present with each other.

We share weekly, rotating chores and contribute to the upkeep and general maintenance of the house.

Both of us are keenly aware of how resource depletion and climate change are effecting our environment and economy, and we make an effort to live consciously and minimize our impact. We compost, recycle, re-use plastic bags, avoid buying things packaged in plastic where possible, hang clothes on the line when the weather permits, ride bicycles, walk or use public transportation and try to reduce water use. We’re not zealots about this, and there are certainly areas where we could improve our efforts. But we’d like to live with folks who share an intention to live a more sustainable life.

We have a piano and welcome music in the home. We also enjoy playing games and inviting friends over for meals or tea, although lately we’ve been so busy that we haven’t had much time for social gatherings. We also have a television that we use to watch DVDs - no cable. The TV sits in a beautiful wood cabinet and is not an intrusive presence in the house.

We both go to bed and wake up early. While it’s not necessary that you do the same, we aren’t big fans of noisy house parties that go until late! Our bedroom is in a separate building in the back, however, so normal socializing in the house at late hours isn’t an issue.

Who We Are:

Elanne: 38-years old, Feldenkrais practitioner with a background in the performing arts. She lived a homesteading life in a rural community on a small island in British Columbia, and looks for ways to bring some of that harmony to her life in the city. She recently got her certificate in permaculture design and is busy experimenting. She is passionate about food and is an armchair sociologist/anthropologist, as well as a student of Zen at the Bay Zen Center in Oakland.

Chris: 34 years old, former Esalen resident (2000-2002) currently studying to become an acupuncturist, writes a blog on health & nutrition called “The Healthy Skeptic”, surfer, dancer, martial artist, photographer, enjoys cooking, hanging out with friends, reading, and being outdoors. Chris is a student of Darlene Cohen at the Russian River Zen Center.

We’ve been married for almost three and a half years and currently have no children. However, that may soon change so you would need to be open to living with a baby. We are also considering getting a dog in the next few months, so it wouldn’t hurt if you liked dogs! Of course if you have a nice dog that you want to bring with you, that might be just right.

If you’re interested:

Please reply to "whitneyhousemate@me.com" with some information about yourself. Please include any experience you have living cooperatively. If it seems like a good fit, we'll get in touch and set up an interview.

hello all
im signed up for a workshop from dec 30-jan 4, and there are no sleeping accomodations available. im on a wait list, but very high up, and checking out other options, otherwise, i may have to cancel my space in the workshop, and I really want to come back to esalen.

have little funds and no car to stay at one of the pricier resorts in the area, so....can anyone recommend a place to stay during those dates?

do you know of somewhere to stay super near by(are there any?), or is anyone else going to be staying elsewhere with a car that we may be able to share? or is there possibly someone who can put me up for that time? any rooms to let?
thanks for reading.
with aloha

I'm looking to network with folks, to extend an invitation to visit Bald Mountain Retreat (www.baldmountainretreat.com) as my guest. Like-minded people who appreciate rustic accommodations are welcome to come up at no charge. (Those who require a private room can inquire about those accommodations as well.)
Basically, I'm offering people the opportunity to come stay with a retired naturopathic doctor in a truly amazing natural setting, secluded, idyllic, peaceful...
Also, if you might like to lead a retreat, please contact me.
Thank you and you are welcome,
Dr David

my story has become to long to tell. i`m 20. i`m homeless in mexico, hitch-hiking back to the states now. i`m a genius. i am "i saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness," but even more than all that, i am genuine. genuine is what i am. i don`t have a place to go. the pain in my spine, which has been gradually worsening for many years, has improved a little with consistant excersise from hiking all the time, but my ability to sleep only diminishes and deminshes. i am awake or dreaming at all times, my dreams... there are these visions as well...

write me, try to get to know me better. esalen looks like the place i need to go, but i don`t have the money nor the means to get the money, to stay for more than a few days, and that`s not going to do it. i would love to get a job there. can someone get me the hook up?

For all people who have transitioned or are transitioning out of Esalen...

Greetings, friends...

I am trying to compile some resources that might assist people who are in the process of transitioning out of Esalen.

We've gotten a great start with the compilation from Udo Zindel "Left or Right at the Top of the Hill?" that I've published on the Esalen Alumni Group site here:

http://www.ithou.org/Leaving_Esalen

However, this is still far from complete... if anyone has any comments or thoughts that we might add to these, please let me know... so I can add them....

It is difficult for many people to make the transition "back out" into the real world, and if there are any ways that we can all help each other through this, it would be, I believe, a very good thing.

Much love to you all, and thanks in advance, for your help...
Staying at Esalen

So what's the easiest way to get to use the tubs and facilities... if you don't want to take a workshop? I believe you have to rent a room, if they have availability. But is it possible to get a "three hour pass" or something, by reserving a massage or something? And do they still provide access afterhours to the public?

Thanks for sharing, oh wise Esalen-insiders...

Call for Submissions: Stories from Esalen

**Call for Submissions**

_At the Speed of Life: Stories from Esalen_ (working title)

Dear friends,

I’m putting together a book that will help characterize what it’s like to be at Esalen.

But in order to do that, I need you to tell your Esalen story.

Please join me in my exploration of what it means to live, work, play, and study at the Esalen Institute by submitting a personal story that describes your journey to Esalen, your experiences there, and/or how the spirit and teachings of Esalen have impacted you in your life today.

The stories can be short or long. They can be funny, inspirational, raunchy, sublime, racy, touching, or all of the above.

In writing your story, I invite you to consider the following questions:
• What first called you to Esalen?
• What has Esalen taught you about love… healing… nakedness… transformation… relationship... the body... beauty… risk… authenticity... honesty... friendship... family... truth… consciousness… community?
• What place does Esalen have in your life today?

The stories should be personal and might be filled with emotion and drama. The stories might use vivid imagery. They may start right in the middle of the action, and when they are read, the readers may feel like they are “in the scene.”

Please avoid: preaching, over-analyzing, or any kind of politics. And, as Fritz would say, “Avoid elephantshit, bullshit, and chickenshit.”

The stories may be of any length, ranging from a 200 word story-snippet to a full 2000 word story. Quality is more important than quantity.

Authors whose stories are selected for publication will receive an honorarium in the range of $50 to $200.

The deadline for story submissions is July 4, 2007. In order to submit your story please register at the site www.ithou.org with a valid email address. Then, click on Groups > Esalen > create story in order to submit your story for consideration.

Although this project is not officially sponsored by the Esalen Institute, a portion of all proceeds from the book sale will be donated to the Esalen Institute.

Finally, if you know of others who would like to be a part of this project, please pass this information on to them.

With your participation, I believe we can create a book about Esalen that gives voice to the magic that happens at the place.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by email at ajwwong@alumni.princeton.edu

Best regards,

ive been watching the past two seasons of entourage on dvd from netflix and today i went to see pirates of the caribbean. and i had a several times where i found myself thinking about these actors as people, as stars and wondering about the massive machine that works behind the scenes to make those few celluloid moments happen for my viewing pleasure. its powerful man. and i found myself thinking that if the celebrities continue to step up and use this power for good, like bono, anjelina, sting, geldof, etc etc that just might be the difference that was needed. i am starting to believe the hype that rob brezsny is preaching in pronoia. i think things really are getting better all the time. halleliua. the world is changing and its happening because the people who know how to do what they love and make their dreams a reality and are lucky enough to be living the life most people dream of having, are beginning to speak out and take the rest of the world by the hand and teach what they know. the artists are finally reclaiming the world. and what are artist really but magicians, sorcerers, warriors of peace and beauty. we are all shaman. i feel inspired by all of this to continue following my own inner spirit to exceed myself and grow and reach the heights i so long for in my own creative self expression. to shine and share my gifts in all their pure, powerful glory with the rest of my human family. if i let myself shine as bright as i know i can, and then let myself shine even brighter, i will be saving the world too, and myself at the same time.

Just got back yesterday from our first experience at Esalen and my heart is longing to return already. I felt as if I had stepped into paradise for a while! We couldn't have asked for better weather this weekend. While I didn't participate in any of the seminars on this trip, (we could only stay over night) the hot springs extremeley relaxing. I almost fell asleep at one point in the tubs.
I couldn't help but compare this place to Harbin and other hot springs. I know that I shouldn't, each place has it's special features, but I'll have to say that Esalen takes the cake!
Has anyone in this tribe ever lived at Esalen for a few months and what was your experience like? I'd love to know!

Cheers to you all.

I've noticed an unspoken downplaying about sexuality at Esalen. (They sort of leave it to their sister community Harbin, to host the Tantra folks.) However, I KNOW it happens and I thought I'd bring up the subject, quietly, here.

I'm curious what your "spontaneous sexual experiences" at Esalen were like. What places are good for a tryst? What times? Did you ever get frisky in the pool? With a partner or with someone you met there?

If you're brave, post your story. If not, send me your tale by message and I'll anonymize them and repost collectively.

It's the elephant in the room.

For all of you who have reveled in the glory that is dance church at Esalen, I would love it if you would please pass this info along to all your like-minded Denver/Boulder Colorado friends!

Denver Dance Church:
Dance Church is a spiritual dance jam (eclectic music) every Sunday morning from 9:30-11am at the D Note in Olde Town Arvada (7519 Grandview Ave.) DJ is the minister, music is the sermon. Wear comfortable clothes and leave your shoes and inhibitions at the door. For those who want to sweat their prayers on Sunday mornings - no dogma, just dance.

Offerings are cool, but not essential.

my Esalen experience

I just returned to reality after spending three work scholar months at Esalen. I wanted to write a post to share a little bit about my experience.

November with David Schiffman was really great. I made some great connections with other people going through major life transitions. We shared our life stories, we bonded, we had an incredible sweat lodge ceremony where we covered each other in mud. It was sweet and beautiful. David's a great man with a gentle heart. I learned a lot about connection and heartfulness and how important it is to just breathe it in and let it go.

December with Thomas Fortel was a whole other experience of fun and joyfulness and play and lots of yoga! With Staff Week happening half way through the month, there was a Burning Man-esque element to the costumery and sillyness. We had Brazil night in the lodge where Josef (from Cabins) made these little Brazilian vodka cocktails and everyone dressed in bathing suits (or nothing at all). Josef ran around in (just) an apron serving dinner, and the night ended with everyone in the kitchen banging on pots and pans. It was quite the party. Not to mention the Rocky Hot Tub Picture Show with lots of sexy cross-dressers and all around naughty behavior.... good thing there were no seminarians around!
The rest of the month was great too. There were two sweat lodge ceremonies, both of which renewed and uplifted me unequivocally. Three hours of yoga available daily, and then singing and dancing and theater games at night. Christmas was delightfully uneventful, and New Year's Eve was a big party in the Dance Dome with Lance spinning.
New Year's Day I began my year with 108 sun salutations. I've never felt stronger and healthier in my entire life.
Spending a month with Thomas was truly special. He's a beautiful light-filled being. It was a true honor to be a part of his group.

And then January with Paula Shaw was surprisingly fun. I'm not one for theater, but I chose the workshop to challenge myself and do something I wouldn't normally do. It turned out to be not as challenging as I had anticipated, and I ended up really loving my group. Our intensive weekend was by far the most intensive of my three months, but I'd have trouble explaining how or why. It was deeply emotional and life-changing. I watched people change drastically having gone through that month with Paula, myself included. I learned about being real and the importance of being true to myself and others.

I feel like a new person. I learned so much there. I'm heading down to the desert in Southern California next week for a solo camping trip. I feel called there, like I need to spend some time to myself to integrate everything I learned at Esalen into my life.
Esalen is so beautiful and special. It's so reassuring to know it's there when I need it. I hope to return for another work scholar month in the summer.

response to my Esalen lecture

Dear Esaleners,

I teach at the California Institute of Integral Studies, and every fall my program ("Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness") goes on retreat to Esalen for a week. While we are there, the faculty give "visiting scholar" lectures in the evenings for the Esalen community.

Last year (Oct. 2003) I gave one of these evening lectures. The subject was the current mass extinction of species of life on earth (see the tribe.net tribe on this subject at http://massextinction.tribe.net , and my own website at http://www.massextinction.net ).

After my talk, I was told second-hand that many people at Esalen were upset and angry about my presentation. So I'm wondering if any of you were there for my talk, and if so whether you could tell me your impressions of the evening and your sense of the response within the community afterwards. I'm trying to get a reality check on what people actually felt about it!

Thanks so much,

David

I'm so excited because tomorrow I leave for the big E for 7 days. My first time there was back at the beginning of November for 5 days. I've been hearing about the place for years and, being a massage therapist, I recently developed an interest in studying massage there. It's like a heaven here on Earth (as you all know). I love getting up in the morning and dancing! I took a course last time from Ellen Watson and Perry Holloman. This time it'll be Peggy Horan and Rachel Fann for two days, and then Brita Ostrom and Robert Helm for 5 days, none of whom I know. The training I got last time has beautifully influenced my sessions since then. I feel lucky to be going back....

I was recently a work scholar in September
and October 2003. I took shadow work with Charlie
Bloom and Meditation with Oliver Bailey and worked
in both cabins and the kitchen..quackquack!

I really miss the community and though I am in touch with some people from my workshop I would love to be in touch with more people who understand the experience of esalen!

Beginning gestalt private practice in santa cruz

Greetings, my name is Rain and I presently live in Santa Cruz.

I orginally arrived at esalen with the intention of staying for a month before traveling to Asia. Well after 2.5 years I finally decided to leave, not to Asia but up to Santa Cruz. I worked for 1.5 in the kitchen and the rest of my time I spent at the Gazebo.

While at esalen I focused on living and studying gestalt process work. Now that I am in Santa Cruz I am beginning my private practice.

I have a MS in counseling and I am presently working with adults in the mental health system.

My work is heavily influenced by my experiences at esalen. I also work with Cheri Huber's approach to ending personal suffering. I see myself as a counselor facilitating the individual process of returning to self, returning to trusting the process of what is happening......utilizing awareness, acceptance and compassion. Please forward my information to anyone that may be in need of such work. I want my services to be available for everyone so I work on a sliding scale. Here is my email: urbanrain88@hotmail.com

If you have any questions about esalen please let me know. I feel deeply blessed for the opportunity of living there for 2 and a half years. I finally knew myself and how I am in the world.
Any chance you have of visiting or spending time there is highly recommended. blessings rain

Hi all...
I'm new to the network and am an old Esalenite. Lived there for about a year and a half in the early 90's. Some of my most dear friends are Esalen connections and I hope to continue to make more friends that resonate that deeply.
All the best,
Bethany

I'm going to Esalen in November for the work study program. I haven't been there yet, and I'm really excited about it. I thought I'd join the tribe here, and see if anyone has any words of advice/encouragement for a newcomer. Thanks!
